A Random Word

Privacy Policy

The short version: we don't collect anything about you. A Random Word sets no cookies, runs no tracking or analytics, shows no ads, and loads nothing from other companies.

At a glance

  • No cookies. The site doesn't set any cookies – not for tracking, not for logins, not for anything.
  • No tracking and no analytics. We don't count, profile or follow visitors, and there are no tracking pixels or "anonymous" statistics tools.
  • No ads. There are no ads, so there are no ad networks watching what you do.
  • No third parties. Every script, font and image comes from our own domain. Your browser never contacts another company when you use the site.
  • No accounts and no forms. There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to fill in.
  • No visitor data on our server. We don't keep records of who visits or what they do.

What our server sees

Like every website, our server has to receive a request from your browser to send you a page. We use that request only to send the page back.

We have switched off application logging of request details, and our web server's access log is set up so it doesn't record IP addresses. The only record kept is the web server's standard error log, which we use only to find and fix technical problems – never to identify or follow visitors.

Most pages are served as ready-made copies from a cache, which keeps the site fast and means there's even less for the server to handle.

Letters and words you type

Generators, games and random tools run in your browser. When you generate random words, flip a coin, spin a wheel or play a party game, the work happens on your own device. Nothing you choose or type is sent to us.

Passwords and passphrases never leave your device. They're created in your browser with its built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). They aren't sent to our server or stored anywhere by us.

Solvers and big word lists ask our server. Tools like the word unscrambler, anagram solver, crossword helper and rhyme generator send the letters, pattern or word you enter to our server, because the full dictionary is too big to load on a phone. We use it only to work out the answer. The result is saved as an anonymous cached answer, so the next person who asks the same thing gets it faster. It is never linked to you or to anyone else.

What is stored in your browser

A few features remember things for you using your browser's own storage (called localStorage). This data stays on your device. It is never sent to our server, and we can't see it.

  • Saved words – words you save from a word's menu.
  • History – your recent batches of results.
  • Copy panel – the words you click collect there until you clear them.
  • Display settings – your theme (light, dark or match system), word size, grid or list layout, and animation setting.

Each item is created only when you use that feature. If you never save a word or change a setting, nothing is stored.

How to clear it: use Clear in the copy panel. For saved words, tap the heart in the copy panel (or open Your words in the menu) and use Clear all; history clears the same way. To remove everything at once, including display settings, clear this site's data in your browser settings. Private or incognito windows forget it all when you close them.

Why there is no cookie banner

Cookie banners ask for your consent to cookies and tracking. We don't set cookies and we don't track you, so there's nothing to ask permission for.

Emailing us

If you email us – for example from the Report a word page, which opens your own email app – we receive your email address and your message like any other email. We use them only to read and reply to your message. We don't add you to a mailing list and we don't share your address with anyone.

Children

A Random Word is meant to be safe for all ages. We don't collect personal information from anyone, including children. Party-game cards are family-friendly by default. If you're under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before emailing us.

Changes to this policy

If we ever change how the site handles information, we'll update this page and the date it shows. We won't quietly add cookies, tracking or ads – any change like that would be stated clearly here first.

Questions

Does A Random Word use cookies?

No. The site sets no cookies of any kind, which is why there's no cookie banner.

Do you use analytics or tracking?

No. We don't use analytics, tracking pixels or any third-party scripts, and our server keeps no data about visitors.

Can you see my saved words?

No. Saved words, history and display settings are stored only in your own browser. They are never sent to us.

Is it safe to make passwords and passphrases here?

Yes. They're generated in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator and are never sent to our server or stored by us.

What happens to the letters I type into the word unscrambler?

They're sent to our server only to find matching words. The answer is cached anonymously so it loads faster next time, and it's never linked to you.
