What the random name generator does
Real names come from public name lists published by the U.S. Census Bureau, so you get names that people in the United States actually have. Fantasy mode works differently: it builds made-up names from syllables, giving you names that sound right for a story or a game but don't come from any list.
You get just the name – we don't show where a name comes from or what it means.
How to use it
- Pick the kind of name. First names, last names, or full names with a first and last name together.
- Choose a gender for first names. Any, female or male.
- Choose how many names you want in one batch.
- Add a first letter if you like. Type it into Starts with to get names that begin with, say, "M".
- Try fantasy mode for invented names, and pick a style: soft, strong or mystic.
- Press Generate (or the Space bar). Tap a name to copy it, or use Copy all in the copy panel to take the whole list.
Ways to use random names
Characters for stories and games
Every story needs names, and a random full name can suggest a whole character. Generate a batch, read them out loud, and keep the ones that feel right. For a fantasy quest or a tabletop role-playing session, switch to fantasy mode and name your wizard, your innkeeper and your villain in seconds.
Sample data for mockups and testing
Designers and developers often need realistic names to fill a demo screen, a sample class list or a test spreadsheet. Full names look natural and aren't linked to anyone's personal details.
Baby name inspiration
Browse female or male first names and filter by first letter. We don't show meanings or origins, but scrolling through a long list is a good way to hear names you hadn't considered.
Team and group names
For a team name with some attitude, try fantasy mode with the strong style. To split people into teams at random, paste everyone's names into the random list picker, shuffle, and divide the list.
Classroom activities
Give math word problems and reading exercises fresh names every time. Students can also use random names for role-play, debates and short story assignments.
Pen names and usernames
Mix an unexpected first name with an unexpected last name and you might find a pen name you like. Fantasy names make memorable usernames too.
Tips for better results
- Compare the fantasy styles. Soft names tend to sound gentle, strong names sound bold, and mystic names sound otherworldly. Try all three for the same character.
- Use a first letter for a theme. Starts with is handy for choosing a name by initial, or for giving a group of characters names that sound like a set.
- Say it out loud. A name that looks great on screen can be hard to say. Read your favorites aloud before you decide.
- Keep a shortlist. Save names from their menu. Saved names and recent batches stay in this browser under Your words.
- Need a made-up word, not a name? The fake word generator invents English-sounding words you can use for places and things.
