What the random letter generator does

Press Generate and the tool picks letters of the English alphabet at random, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator. Every letter in the set you choose has the same chance of coming up. You can get a single letter or a whole row of them, in capitals, small letters or a mix.

Letters work just like words on the rest of the site: tap one to copy it, and it lands in the copy panel so you can collect several.

How to use it

  1. Choose how many letters. Anything from 1 to 100.
  2. Pick the case. Uppercase, lowercase, or both mixed together.
  3. Choose the letter set. All letters, vowels only or consonants only.
  4. Turn on No repeats if each letter should appear only once in a set.
  5. Press Generate (or the Space bar) – or switch to wheel mode and spin the letter wheel instead.
  6. Tap a letter to copy it. Use Copy all in the copy panel to grab the whole set.

Ways to use random letters

Category games

In the classic pen-and-paper game, everyone races to name a country, an animal, a food and a job that all start with the same letter. Let the generator pick the letter for each round, and nobody can accuse the host of choosing an easy one.

Alphabet and phonics practice

Show a random letter and ask a child to say its sound, name a word that starts with it, or find it in a book. Mix uppercase and lowercase to practice matching the two forms.

Word challenges

Pick a letter and see who can list the most words that start with it in one minute. Check your answers against our lists of words that start with any letter.

Drawing and writing prompts

Draw three things that begin with the letter you get. Or write one sentence where every word starts with it – a fun way to practice alliteration.

Make words from random letters

Generate seven letters, then see how many words you can build from them. When you're done, paste them into words from letters to see what you missed.

Fair little decisions

Let a letter decide who goes first: the first player whose name contains it starts. Or pick your next book by an author whose last name begins with the letter.

Tips for better results

  • No repeats has a limit. With all letters, you can get at most 26 – ask for 26 and you get the whole alphabet in a random order. Vowels only and consonants only have fewer.
  • Use the wheel for a group. Spinning the letter wheel on a big screen or a projector builds suspense in a classroom or at a party.
  • Skip the tough ones. Many groups play category games without letters like Q, X and Z. If one comes up, just generate again.
  • Need a random word instead? The random word generator can give you words that start with any letter you choose.

Questions

How do I pick a random letter?

Press Generate and the tool shows a random letter from A to Z. Each press gives a new pick, and every letter in your chosen set has the same chance.

Can I get random letters with no repeats?

Yes. Turn on No repeats and no letter appears twice in the same set. That also caps the count at the number of letters available – 26 for the full alphabet.

Is there a random letter generator wheel?

Yes. Switch to wheel mode and spin to land on a letter. It is a fun way to pick a letter in front of a class or a group of friends.

Can I pick only vowels or only consonants?

Yes. Choose vowels only or consonants only from the letter set. That is useful for phonics practice and some word games.

Can I get lowercase letters?

Yes. Choose uppercase, lowercase, or both to get a mix of capitals and small letters.

How many letters can I generate at once?

Anything from 1 to 100. With No repeats turned on, you can get up to as many letters as your chosen set holds.

Are the letters truly random?

Yes. Your browser's cryptographic random number generator picks every letter, so no letter is favored over another.
