What the password generator does
The tool builds passwords from the character types you choose, picking each character with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). A strength meter shows how strong the result is, and you can generate several passwords at once to choose from.
Passwords are created only on your device. They are never sent to our server, never stored and never logged.
How to create a strong password
- Set the length. Choose anything from 8 to 64 characters. Longer is stronger.
- Choose the character types. Turn uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols on or off to match what a website allows.
- Exclude look-alike characters if you'll ever read or type the password by hand. This leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as I, l, 1, O and 0.
- Generate several at once if you want a few to choose from.
- Watch the strength meter. It updates as you change the length and character types.
- Press Copy and paste the password straight into the sign-up form or your password manager.
Ways to use a random password generator
New accounts
Every time you sign up for something, give it its own fresh password. It takes seconds and keeps one leak from spreading to your other accounts.
Replacing a reused password
If you've used the same password in several places, change the most important accounts first – usually email, banking and anything that can reset your other passwords.
Router and device admin logins
Home routers, printers and smart devices often ship with simple default passwords. Swap them for a long random one and keep a note of it somewhere safe.
Temporary passwords
Setting up an account for a family member or a new colleague? Give them a random starting password and ask them to change it when they first sign in.
Test accounts
Developers and testers often need realistic passwords for test logins. Generate several at once and copy them into your test notes.
Password tips
- Length matters most. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. A long password with fewer character types often beats a short one that uses them all.
- One account, one password. Reusing a password is the easiest way for one leak to become many.
- Use a password manager. It remembers long random passwords for you, so you only need to remember one strong master password.
- Exclude look-alikes for anything typed by hand, such as a password you read from a sticky note on a new device.
- If a site rejects symbols, turn symbols off and add a few extra characters of length instead.
- Typing it often? A passphrase made of random words is easier to type and remember.
Questions
What makes a password strong?
Length, randomness and being used only once. A long password made of randomly chosen characters is much harder to guess than one built from names, dates or common words.
How long should my password be?
Aim for at least 12 characters for everyday accounts and 16 or more for important ones. If a password manager remembers it for you, longer costs you nothing.
Is this random password generator safe to use?
Passwords are generated in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues and never leave your device. We don't send, store or log them.
What are look-alike characters?
Characters that are easy to mix up when reading, such as capital I, small l and the number 1, or capital O and zero. Excluding them helps when you have to type a password by hand.
Can I generate several passwords at once?
Yes. Generate a few at a time and copy the one you like best.
Is a password or a passphrase better?
Both can be strong. Random character passwords are best stored in a password manager, while a passphrase is easier to remember and type yourself.
Why does a website reject my new password?
Some sites limit the length or the symbols they accept. Adjust the length or turn symbols off, then generate again.
