What the random adjective generator does

Adjectives are describing words. They tell you what something is like: its size, color, mood, feel or personality. Press Generate and the random adjective generator picks a batch of them at random from our list of everyday English words, with no repeats in the same batch.

Everything happens in your browser, so each new set appears the moment you click.

How to use it

  1. Choose how many adjectives. Anything from 1 to 200 per batch.
  2. Keep the word type on Adjectives. You can switch to nouns, verbs, easy words for kids, rare words or another language from the same menu.
  3. Add letter filters if you like. Set the letters an adjective starts with or ends with, letters it must contain, or letters it must leave out.
  4. Set a size. Measure words in letters or syllables and choose equals, less than or greater than – say, adjectives with exactly 2 syllables.
  5. Turn on Show definitions to see a short meaning under each word, where we have one.
  6. Press Generate (or the Space bar). Tap a word to copy it, or open its three-dot menu to save it or find rhymes. Reset clears every filter.

Ways to use random adjectives

Describing a person or character

Need a random adjective generator for a person? Generate a batch and keep the words that suit a character's looks, mood or personality. Not every adjective fits a person, so ask for a longer list and pick. Pairing a kind word with an awkward one – patient but restless – gives a character instant depth.

Livelier writing

Swap tired words like nice, good and big for something fresher. Generate ten adjectives and rewrite one paragraph of your own work using at least three of them.

Poems and song lyrics

Adjectives set the mood of a line. Filter by syllables to fit your rhythm, then look up words that rhyme with them in the rhyme generator.

Grammar practice in class

Put this list next to a batch of random nouns and ask students to match each adjective with a noun it could describe. For a harder round, ask for the opposite of every adjective.

Fill-in-the-blank stories

Write a short story with blanks marked "adjective", "noun" and "verb", then fill each one with a random word. The results are usually ridiculous, which is the point.

Icebreakers

Show the list and ask everyone to choose the word that best describes their week, their morning or their pet. It gets a quiet group talking within a minute.

Tips for better results

  • Search by ending. Many adjectives end in -ful, -ous, -ive or -less. Put one of those in Ends with for a batch that shares a sound.
  • Go short for younger kids. Short adjectives are usually easier to read, so try "Letters – Less than – 6".
  • Try alliteration. Use Starts with to get adjectives that share a first letter with a name, like a team or a pet name.
  • Check the meaning first. If a word is new to you, open its menu or turn on definitions before you use it.
  • Keep your favorites. Saved words and recent batches stay in this browser under Your words.

Questions

What are describing words?

Describing words, or adjectives, tell you more about a noun – how it looks, sounds, feels or behaves. In "a quiet red house", quiet and red are the describing words.

Is there a random adjective generator for a person?

You can use this one. Generate a longer batch and keep the words that describe personality, mood or looks; the rest you can simply skip.

Can I get adjectives that start with a certain letter?

Yes. Type one or more letters into Starts with. It is handy for alliteration, like a name and a describing word that begin the same way.

Why do some words look like nouns or verbs?

Many English words can be more than one part of speech. Clean can be an adjective or a verb, for example, so any word that can work as an adjective may appear here.

How many adjectives can I get at once?

Up to 200 per batch. If only a few adjectives match your filters, you will get all of them – loosen a filter to see more.

Can I see what an adjective means?

Turn on Show definitions, or open the three-dot menu on any word to read its meaning when we have one.

Is the random adjective generator free?

Yes, free with no sign-up. The site sets no cookies and doesn't track you; saved words stay only in your browser.
