What the random noun generator does

Press Generate and the tool picks a batch of nouns at random from our list of everyday English words. You get naming words – objects, animals, places, jobs, feelings and ideas – and no noun appears twice in the same batch. The picks happen in your own browser, so a new set shows up instantly.

Plenty of English words can be more than one part of speech. Light can be a noun, a verb or an adjective, so now and then you'll see a word that feels like it belongs in two groups.

How to use it

  1. Choose how many nouns. Pick anything from 1 to 200 per batch.
  2. Keep the word type on Nouns. The same menu lets you switch to verbs, adjectives, easy words for kids, rare words or another language at any time.
  3. Add letter filters if you like. Set the letters a noun starts with or ends with, letters it must contain, or letters it must leave out.
  4. Set a size. Measure nouns in letters or syllables and choose equals, less than or greater than – for example, nouns with fewer than 3 syllables.
  5. Turn on Show definitions to see a short meaning under each word, where we have one.
  6. Press Generate (or the Space bar). Tap a noun to copy it. Open the three-dot menu on any word to save it or find rhymes and anagrams. Reset clears every filter.

Ways to use random nouns

Drawing prompts

A random noun generator for drawing takes away the hardest part: deciding what to draw. Generate five nouns and give yourself two minutes for each one, or squeeze two of them into one strange picture. For words chosen because they're fun to sketch, try random things to draw.

Party and guessing games

Nouns name things people can act out, describe or ask questions about, so they suit charades, draw-and-guess and twenty questions. Read one out and keep the rest in the copy panel for the next round. Nobody can say the host picked the easy ones. The charades generator adds categories and a round timer.

Grammar lessons

Generate a list and ask students to sort the nouns into people, places, things and ideas. They can write the plural of each one, or spot the words that also work as verbs. Turn on definitions for any word the class doesn't know yet.

Story starters

Pick three nouns and write a short story that uses all of them. A person, a place and an object is a classic mix – keep generating until you have one of each. Add a few random adjectives to describe them.

Naming and brainstorming

One unexpected noun can spark a project name, a party theme or a song title. Generate a long batch, save the ones that stand out, and come back to them later.

Tips for better results

  • Want a list to print or share? Generate up to 200 nouns, then use Copy all or download the batch as a text file. That's your own random noun list in seconds.
  • Need simpler words for kids? Set the size to "Letters – Less than – 6" for short nouns, or switch the word type to easy words.
  • Building a word game? Combine a starting letter with a fixed length, such as nouns that start with B and have exactly 4 letters.
  • Contains means letters in a row. Typing "oo" finds nouns with a double O, like spoon or book.
  • Keep the good ones. Save a noun from its menu. Saved words and your recent batches stay in this browser under Your words.
  • Share your setup. The address bar updates as you change filters, so a teacher can send one link to a whole class.

Questions

What is a noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea – for example teacher, beach, spoon or courage. Almost every sentence has at least one.

Can I make a random noun generator list?

Yes. Ask for up to 200 nouns in one batch, then copy them all or download them as a text file to use in a worksheet, a game or a notebook.

Is this a good random noun generator for drawing?

It works well – most nouns name things you can picture. You will also meet a few ideas like patience that are harder to draw, so for words picked to be sketched, use random things to draw.

Are the nouns really random?

Yes. Each noun is picked by your browser's cryptographic random number generator from the words that match your filters, and no noun repeats within a batch.

Why do some words look like verbs?

Many English words do double duty. Run, paint and dance can all name a thing or an action, so a word that can be used as a noun may appear here even if you think of it first as a verb.

Why did I get fewer nouns than I asked for?

Only that many nouns match your filters. Remove a letter filter or change the size to widen the list.

Is the random noun generator free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up. The site sets no cookies, and the nouns you save stay in your own browser.
