These terms explain the few rules for using A Random Word. By using the site, you agree to them. We've kept them short and in plain language.
Using the site
A Random Word is free to use, with no account and no sign-up. You're welcome to use the words, names, numbers, questions and other results our tools give you – in games, lessons, writing, projects or anything else.
Please use the site lawfully and kindly. Don't use it to harass anyone or to do anything illegal.
Provided as it is
We work hard to make our tools accurate and reliable, but we can't promise they're perfect. The site and everything on it are provided "as is", without any warranty of any kind.
- Word lists, definitions, syllable counts and rhymes may contain mistakes or gaps.
- A word being in our dictionary doesn't mean every game, teacher or competition will accept it.
- Facts, ideas and suggestions are for fun and inspiration, not professional advice.
- The site may sometimes be slow or unavailable, and tools may change or be removed.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss or damage that comes from using the site or relying on its results.
Word lists and sensitive words
Our dictionaries are large, and real language includes words that some people find offensive or upsetting. We filter out offensive words and slurs, and our party-game cards are family-friendly by default, but no filter is perfect. If you spot a word that shouldn't be there, please use the Report a word link at the bottom of any page.
Fair use of the site
The site and its tools are for people. Please don't:
- use bots, scrapers or other automated tools to copy pages or word lists in bulk;
- call our internal data addresses (the ones our pages use to fetch results) from your own apps or scripts;
- send so many requests that the site slows down for everyone else;
- try to break, overload or get around the site's security or rate limits.
We may block traffic that does any of these things.
Passwords and passphrases
Passwords and passphrases are generated in your own browser and never sent to us. How you use and store them is up to you, and we can't recover them if they're lost.
Who owns the content
The site's design, page copy, question banks, prompts, party-game cards, foreign word lists and artwork are written or made by A Random Word and protected by copyright. Please don't republish them in bulk or present them as your own.
Some of our word data comes from open datasets, each under its own license. You'll find every source and license on our credits page.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when we add new tools. When we do, we'll change this page and its date. If you keep using the site after a change, the updated terms apply.
