What the imposter word generator does

The tool picks a secret word from the category you choose and hands it out in private, one player at a time. Most players see the word. The imposter sees only "You are the imposter" – and has to bluff. When the talking is over, one tap reveals who the imposter was and what the word was.

The whole game runs in your browser. There's nothing to print, no cards to shuffle and no game master who has to sit out.

How to use it

  1. Set the number of players. Anything from 3 to 20.
  2. Choose how many imposters. One, two or three. Bigger groups are more fun with more than one.
  3. Pick a category. Choose from 15: animals, food, places, jobs, sports, household items, school, vehicles, nature, clothing, music, holidays, body, weather and hobbies. Or choose any for a surprise.
  4. Decide on the hint. Turn on give the imposter the category as a hint to make bluffing easier. Leave it off for a harder game.
  5. Pass the phone. Each player taps to see their card – the secret word or "You are the imposter" – then hides it and passes the phone to the next person.
  6. Talk, vote, reveal. Once everyone has seen a card, play your rounds and vote. Then tap Reveal to show who the imposter was and the word.

How to play the imposter game

Everyone except the imposter knows the secret word. The players want to find the imposter. The imposter wants to blend in.

  1. Sit in a circle. After the phone has gone round, pick someone to start.
  2. Give one clue each. Going around the circle, each player says one word or a short phrase linked to the secret word. Be clear enough to prove you know it, but vague enough that the imposter can't work it out.
  3. The imposter bluffs. They listen to the others and invent a clue that sounds right.
  4. Discuss and vote. After one or two rounds, talk about who seemed unsure. Then everyone votes for one player.
  5. Reveal. If the group caught the imposter, the players win. If not, the imposter wins.

A popular extra rule: a caught imposter gets one guess at the secret word. A correct guess steals the win.

Ways to use it

Family gatherings

The game works across a wide age range. Pick easy categories like animals or food so younger players can join in.

Holiday parties

With up to 20 players and three imposters, it scales from a small dinner to a full living room.

Classroom warm-ups

Use the school or body categories as a vocabulary review. Students have to describe a word without saying it, which is great speaking practice.

Team-building

A short round gets people talking, listening closely and reading each other. You need nothing but one phone.

Game night opener

A quick round or two is a relaxed way to start before a longer game.

Tips

  • Hide your card every time. Tap to hide it before passing, so the next player only sees their own card.
  • Keep clues short. One word per turn makes the game faster and harder for the imposter.
  • Use the hint for new players. Giving the imposter the category makes the first few games friendlier.
  • Too easy? Choose a broad category, such as any, so the imposter has less to go on.
  • Want another party game? Try the charades generator for acting or truth or dare questions for a sleepover.

Questions

What is an imposter word generator?

It picks a secret word and deals it to every player except the imposter. This one runs on a single phone, so you simply pass it around the group.

Is it imposter or impostor game word generator?

Both spellings are correct and mean the same thing. This impostor game word generator works the same however you spell it.

Why not just use a random word generator for the imposter game?

With a plain word list, someone has to read the word and tell everyone except the imposter, so that person can't play. This tool deals the cards for you, keeps the imposter secret and reveals everything at the end.

How many people do you need to play?

At least three. The tool supports 3 to 20 players, with one to three imposters.

Should the imposter get a hint?

It's up to your group. The category hint helps new or younger players; leave it off for a tougher bluffing game.

Is it free and private?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and the whole game runs in your browser. Player numbers and words are never sent to our server.
