What it does
Type a few letters and the tool finds every word in our dictionary of about 171,000 English words that contains all of them. The letters don't need to sit together or appear in the order you typed: enter q and z and you'll get quiz, quartz and squeeze alike. Common words are marked so they're easy to spot.
How to find words with letters
- Type the letters a word must contain. Enter them in any order – "zq" finds the same words as "qz".
- Set a length (optional). Choose a minimum and a maximum, or the same number twice for an exact length.
- Starts with (optional). Type the first letter or letters, such as "s" or "un".
- Ends with (optional). Type the ending, such as "y" or "ing".
- Search. Every matching word appears. Tap one to copy it, or open its three-dot menu for a definition, syllables, rhymes and anagrams.
How it differs from other word finders
This page answers one question: "which words have these letters in them?" Other letters are allowed, so the list can be long. That makes it different from:
- the word unscrambler, which builds words only from the letters you type – nothing extra;
- words containing a letter group, which finds letters sitting together in a row, such as "ight";
- words with two letters, ready-made lists for letter pairs such as Q and Z.
Ways to use it
Word games with an awkward letter
Holding a Q, an X or a Z and not sure where it fits? Type it with a vowel or two and see which words could use it.
Five-letter guessing games
Know a few letters are in the answer but not where they go? Type them, set the length to 5, and scan the list. When you know exact positions, the 5-letter word finder is faster.
Phonics and spelling lessons
Find words that contain both p and h, or g and h, to show students how letters team up in English spelling.
Writing and wordplay
Writing a tongue twister, a poem or a slogan around one sound? Pull a list of words that all contain the same letters and see what fits.
Crosswords and puzzles
When you know some letters of an answer but not their spots, this is a quick way to see what's possible.
Tips
- Try an example. q and z give quiz, quartz, quizzed and squeeze. v and x give vex, vixen, convex, vertex and vortex.
- Long list? Add a length or a starting letter. Even one or two filters cut the list down fast.
- Use rare letters. Letters like J, Q, X and Z appear in far fewer words, so including one keeps the results short.
- Need letters side by side? Browse words containing "ight" or any other letter group instead.
- Want more filters? The advanced word search adds excluded letters, patterns and part of speech.
Questions
How do I find words containing certain letters?
Type the letters into the box and search. You'll get every word that contains all of them, in any order, with other letters allowed.
Do the letters have to be next to each other?
No. They can appear anywhere in the word. If you need letters side by side, browse words containing a letter group instead.
What's the difference between a word finder using letters and one containing letters?
A word finder using letters, like the word unscrambler, builds words only from the letters you type. A word finder containing letters, like this one, lists words that include your letters plus any others.
Can I find letter words with a certain length?
Yes. Set the minimum and maximum length – for example 5 and 5 to see only five-letter words with your letters.
Can I find words with two specific letters, like Q and Z?
Yes. Type both letters here, or open a ready-made list such as words with Q and Z.
Is this word finder by letters free?
Yes – it's free, with no sign-up, no cookies and no tracking.
