Words That Start With…

Pick a letter or type the first few letters, and we'll list every word that starts with them – common words first, rare ones after.

A to Z

How to find words that start with certain letters

  1. Choose your letters. Tap a letter from A to Z, or type up to four letters in the box – a prefix like re, un or over works just as well as a single letter.
  2. Open the list. You'll see every word in our dictionary that starts with those letters. Common words come first and are marked with a small dot.
  3. Narrow it down. Use the length tabs to see words of one size, add letters the word must end with or contain, or sort A to Z and Z to A.
  4. Keep what you need. Tap a word to copy it, or use Copy all and Download to take the whole list with you.

Some letter groups are too rare to have a list of their own. For those, the advanced word search can still dig up the few words that match.

Popular prefixes and what they mean

A prefix is a group of letters added to the front of a word to change its meaning. Knowing a handful of them makes long words much easier to understand – and to spell.

  • un- means "not" or "the opposite of": unkind, unlock, unusual.
  • re- means "again" or "back": redo, rebuild, return.
  • pre- means "before": preview, prepay, preheat.
  • dis- means "not" or "apart": dislike, disagree, disappear.
  • mis- means "wrongly": misspell, misplace, mislead.
  • over- means "too much" or "above": overcook, overflow, overhead.
  • sub- means "under" or "below": subway, submarine, subtitle.
  • non- means "not": nonstop, nonsense, nonfiction.
  • out- means "more than" or "outside": outrun, outgrow, outdoor.
  • anti- means "against": antifreeze, antibody, antisocial.

One thing to watch: a list of words starting with certain letters also includes words where those letters aren't a prefix at all. Under starts with un but doesn't mean "not der", and read starts with re without meaning "ad again".

Ways to use words that start with the same letters

Word games and puzzles

Many puzzles hand you the first letter or two. Open the list, pick a length, and scan the common words first. If you're solving a five-letter guessing puzzle, jump straight to a list such as 5-letter words starting with S, or use the 5-letter word finder to track every clue.

Alliteration and tongue twisters

Strings of words that start with the same sound are fun to say and easy to remember. Pick a letter, grab five words, and see if you can turn them into a sentence – then test it on a friend. Our tongue twisters show how it's done.

Phonics and spelling practice

A "letter of the week" list takes seconds: choose a letter, keep common words only, and pick a short length for young readers. Older students can compare words that share a prefix and work out what it means.

Acrostic poems

Each line of an acrostic starts with the next letter of a word or name. When you're stuck on a line, the list for that letter gives you plenty of options – or let the acrostic poem generator draft the whole poem.

Names and branding

Matching first letters make names catchy, from team names to product ideas. Collect words you like in the copy panel, then compare them side by side.

Tips

  • Start broad, then narrow. One letter gives you thousands of words; add a second letter to cut the list down fast.
  • Use the length tabs when a puzzle tells you how many letters you need.
  • Know the ending too? Add it in the ends with box, or browse words that end in any letters.
  • Letters in any order? If you know the letters but not where they go, try words with letters or the word unscrambler.
  • Need lists by length? See all 5-letter words or 7-letter words, common words first.
