Words That End In…

Pick a letter or type the last few letters, and we'll list every word that ends with them – common words first, rare ones after.

A to Z

How to find words that end in certain letters

  1. Choose your ending. Tap a letter from A to Z, or type up to four letters in the box – an ending like ing, ness or tion works as well as a single letter.
  2. Open the list. You'll see every word in our dictionary that ends with those letters. Common words come first and are marked with a small dot.
  3. Narrow it down. Use the length tabs to see words of one size, add a starting letter or letters the word must contain, or sort A to Z and Z to A.
  4. Keep what you need. Tap a word to copy it, or use Copy all and Download to take the whole list with you.

If an ending is so rare that it has no list of its own, the advanced word search can still find the handful of words that match.

Common word endings and what they do

Many endings are suffixes: letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning or turn it into a different kind of word. Here are some of the most useful ones.

  • -ing shows an action that's happening: running, singing, thinking.
  • -ed puts many verbs in the past: jumped, played, wanted.
  • -er can mean "a person who" or "more": baker, teacher, faster.
  • -est means "the most": biggest, kindest, brightest.
  • -ly often turns a describing word into one about how something is done: quickly, softly, bravely.
  • -ness turns a quality into a thing: kindness, darkness, happiness.
  • -ful means "full of": joyful, careful, hopeful.
  • -less means "without": fearless, endless, careless.
  • -able means "can be": readable, washable, likable.
  • -tion turns many verbs into nouns: action, creation, invitation.
  • -ment does the same job: movement, payment, agreement.
  • -ous means "full of" or "having": famous, nervous, dangerous.

Not every word with these letters at the end uses them as a suffix. Thing ends in ing and bed ends in ed, but neither is built from a shorter word.

Ways to use words that end in the same letters

Rhymes for poems and songs

Words with the same ending are a good place to look for rhymes – but spelling can trick you. Though, through, tough and cough all end in ough and sound completely different. For rhymes by sound, use the rhyme generator.

Grammar and spelling lessons

Endings are a simple way to teach word families: collect -ful and -less pairs (careful, careless), or compare -tion and -sion. Keep common words only for younger learners.

Word games

In many letter tile games you can extend a word that's already on the board by adding letters to the end. A list of endings shows which extensions are real words.

Crosswords and guessing puzzles

When you know the last letters, pick a length and scan the common words first. For gaps in the middle, the crossword helper matches patterns, and the 5-letter word finder handles green, yellow and gray clues.

Creative writing

Try writing a short poem where every line ends with a word from the same list. It's a quick way to find a rhythm.

Tips

  • Start with one letter, then add more. Ending in e gives you thousands of words; ending in ble gives you far fewer.
  • Use the length tabs when you know how long the word is.
  • Know the start too? Add it in the starts with box, or browse words that start with any letters.
  • Looking for a five-letter word? Lists such as 5-letter words ending in E put common words first.
  • Letters anywhere? Use words containing a group of letters, or words with letters in any order.

Questions

Which letter do most English words end with?

In our dictionary, S ends far more words than any other letter, mostly because of plurals like cats and verb forms like runs. E, D, Y and G come next.

Which letters do the fewest words end with?

Q, J and V end the fewest words in our list. English words almost never end in Q or J, and most words that sound like they end in V are spelled with VE, like love and give.

Can I search for an ending longer than one letter?

Yes. Type up to four letters, such as ing, ful or ness, and you'll get every word that ends with exactly those letters.

Do words that end in the same letters rhyme?

Often, but not always. English spelling doesn't always match sound, so check with the rhyme generator, which matches words by pronunciation.

Do the lists include rare words?

Yes. Common words are shown first and marked with a small dot. Switch Common words only off to see rare, old and technical words too.

Is this free?

Yes – every list is free to use, copy and download, with no sign-up. The site sets no cookies and doesn't track you.
