What the random question generator does
Every card is an open question – the kind that needs more than a yes or a no. We wrote them all ourselves, sorted them into categories and gave each one an age rating, so you can keep things light or go a little deeper.
Questions for kids and teens show by default. Questions for adults are optional and never explicit.
How to use it
- Choose categories with the chips at the top, or leave them all on.
- Set the age rating. Kids and teens show by default; add adults for grown-up conversations.
- Press Next (or the Space bar) for a new question.
- Pick a view. Show one question at a time for a chat, or a list when you need several.
- Copy a question to paste it into a message, a slide or a card.
Ways to use random questions
Conversation starters
Stuck after "How are you?" Ask one random question and let the conversation run from there.
Getting to know someone
New friends, roommates or a first date – a few good questions to ask go a long way.
Team meetings
Open a meeting with one question and a quick round of answers. It's a short, friendly start that helps people relax.
Family dinner
Put the phone in the middle of the table and let a different person press Next each time.
Classroom
Use a question as a speaking prompt, a journal starter or a quick end-of-lesson check-in.
Hot seat game
One player sits in the "hot seat" and answers three random questions in a row. Then the next player takes the seat.
How to ask better questions
A random question gets the conversation started. What you do next keeps it going.
- Listen for the detail. Most answers include one small detail worth asking about.
- Follow up once. "Why?" or "What happened next?" often brings the best story.
- Share your own answer. When you answer too, the other person feels more at ease.
- Don't rush. A short pause gives people time to think of a real answer.
Tips
- Skip freely. Press Next if a question doesn't fit the moment.
- Match the rating to the room. The default ratings keep things suitable for everyone.
- Save your favorites. Copy the best questions into a note for your next party or meeting.
- Share a set of filters. The address bar updates as you change categories, so you can send the link to someone else.
- Want a game instead? Try would you rather or never have I ever. For writing ideas, see writing prompts.
Questions
What makes a good conversation starter?
An open question about the other person's experiences or opinions. Questions that start with "what", "how" or "when" usually get longer answers than yes-or-no ones.
What are good questions to ask a friend?
Ask about memories, plans and small preferences – the details people rarely mention on their own. Press Next until one feels right for the moment.
Can I use the random question generator at work?
Yes. The default ratings keep the questions light and friendly, which suits icebreakers and team meetings.
What are good questions to ask a group?
Choose questions everyone can answer quickly, about favorites, small memories or "what if" ideas. Go around the circle so each person gets a turn.
Can I see several questions at once?
Yes. Switch to the list view to see a batch of questions, then copy the ones you want to keep.
Are the questions suitable for kids?
Yes. The kids rating is on by default. Choose kids only for young children.
How is this different from would you rather?
Would you rather gives two options to choose from. These are open questions, so people answer in their own words.
Is it free and private?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no cookies, and nothing you do on the page is stored on our server.
