What the random sentence generator does
Every sentence comes from a bank we wrote ourselves, sorted into six categories: simple, everyday, funny, descriptive, questions and nonsense. The tool picks one at random, or shows several at once if you'd rather see a list.
Simple sentences are short and clear. Everyday sentences sound like real life, funny ones aim for a smile, and descriptive ones paint a picture. Questions are, well, questions – and nonsense sentences are gloriously silly.
Nothing is stitched together from random words, so every sentence reads properly – even the ones that make no sense on purpose.
How to use it
- Pick a category with the chips: simple, everyday, funny, descriptive, questions or nonsense.
- Choose how many to show. See one sentence at a time, or several together.
- Press Next (or the Space bar) for a new sentence.
- Copy it with the copy button.
- Switch to list view when you want to browse lots of sentences at once.
Ways to use random sentences
Story starters
Use a random sentence as the first line of a story and keep writing for ten minutes. Descriptive and nonsense sentences make especially good openers. For bigger ideas, browse our writing prompts.
Typing practice
Short, complete sentences with real punctuation are great for warming up your fingers. When you're ready for longer passages, move on to the random paragraph generator.
Grammar lessons
Simple sentences are perfect for finding the subject and the verb. Questions help with punctuation and word order, and descriptive sentences are full of adjectives to spot.
English learners
Read a sentence aloud, then rewrite it in the past tense, turn it into a question, or translate it into your own language and back.
Party laughs
Pick the funny or nonsense category and read sentences aloud in your most dramatic voice. Or act one out and let everyone guess the sentence.
Handwriting practice
Copying a sentence neatly is a small, focused task for kids practicing print or cursive. A new sentence each day keeps it from getting boring.
Tips for better results
- Use questions to get people talking. The questions category works as quick conversation starters at the dinner table or in class.
- Draw the nonsense. Nonsense sentences make brilliant drawing challenges – try sketching exactly what the sentence says.
- Change one word. Rewrite a sentence by swapping a single word for a random noun and see how the meaning changes.
- Compare in list view. List view makes it easy to pick the best sentence for a lesson or a game.
- Read it out loud. Saying a sentence aloud is a quick way to practice pronunciation and rhythm, especially for English learners.
- Flip through fast. When you're not typing in a box, the Space bar shows the next sentence.
Questions
Is there a funny random sentence generator?
Yes. Pick the funny category for sentences written to make you smile, or nonsense for ones that are silly from start to finish.
Can I get a random sentence generator that makes no sense?
Choose the nonsense category. Those sentences read like normal English but describe things that make no sense at all, which makes them great for drawing and storytelling games.
What kinds of sentences can I get?
Six kinds: simple, everyday, funny, descriptive, questions and nonsense. Tap a category chip to choose one.
Can I use a random sentence for a drawing game?
Yes. Nonsense and descriptive sentences make great drawing prompts – one person draws the sentence and everyone else guesses what it says.
Who writes the sentences?
We do. Every sentence in the bank is original and written for this site, not copied from books or other websites.
Can I see more than one sentence at a time?
Yes. Choose how many to show, or switch to list view to browse lots of sentences at once.
Are the sentences good for typing practice?
Yes. They are short and use normal punctuation. For longer text, try the random paragraph generator.
Is the random sentence generator free?
Yes, free with no sign-up. The site sets no cookies and doesn't track you.
