What the spelling bee word generator does
Pick a grade and the tool draws a random set of words from our practice list for that grade. Press Say it and your browser's built-in speech voice reads the word aloud, so you can practice the way a real spelling bee works: listen first, then spell.
Practice mode turns it into a quiz. You hear a word, type your spelling, and check it straight away.
How to use it

Ways to use spelling practice words
Getting ready for a school spelling bee
Practice under the same conditions as the real thing. Hide the words, press Say it, and spell each word out loud, letter by letter, before you check.
Weekly spelling tests at home
Parents can generate ten words for their child's grade, hide them, and read them out one at a time. Show the list at the end and go over the tricky ones together.
Classroom warm-ups
Put the page on the board and let Say it read each word. Students write their answers on whiteboards, then you reveal the list and everyone checks their own work.
Solo practice for kids
Practice mode lets children practice on their own. The device reads the word, so nobody needs to sit beside them reading the list.
Family spelling contests
Take turns and give one point for every word spelled right. Let younger kids use their own grade and challenge the grown-ups with the grade 8 list.
English learners
Hearing a word and then seeing how it's spelled helps connect sounds to letters – one of the hardest parts of English.
Tips for spelling practice
- Say the word, spell it, say it again. It's a classic spelling bee habit that helps you keep your place.
- Hear it again. Press Say it as many times as you need. In a real spelling bee you can usually ask to hear the word again, too.
- Start a grade lower. Begin where you get most words right, then move up when it feels easy.
- Repeat the tricky ones. Write down any word you miss and practice it again the next day. You can also save it from the word's menu.
- Voices differ by device. Say it uses the speech voice your device provides, so it may sound different on a phone and a laptop.
- No sound? Check your volume and make sure your device isn't muted.
Questions
Is there a random word generator for spelling bee practice?
Yes, this one. Pick a grade from 1 to 8 and it draws a random set of practice words for that level, with no account needed.
How does the word get read aloud?
Say it uses the speech voice built into your browser or device. That means the voice can sound a little different from one device to another.
Why can't I hear anything?
Check that your volume is up and your device isn't muted. A few browsers don't include a speech voice, so if Say it stays silent, try another browser.
What grades are the words for?
Grades 1 through 8. Lower grades have shorter, more common words, and higher grades add longer, trickier spellings.
How does practice mode work?
You hear a word, type your spelling and check it. If it is wrong, you can see the right spelling before moving on to the next word.
Can I use this spelling bee random word generator in class?
Yes. Generate a list for your grade, hide the words, and let Say it read them or read them out yourself. Copy the list first if you want it on paper.
Are these official competition words?
No. They are our own practice lists, sorted by grade and made for learning. They are not taken from any official competition list.
