What the writing prompts generator does

It gives you one creative writing prompt at a time from a collection we wrote ourselves. Each prompt is a small spark – a situation, a question or a first line – to get your pen moving.

Choose from ten genres: fantasy, science fiction, mystery, adventure, everyday life, funny, spooky (mild), for kids, poetry and journaling. Read prompts one by one, or switch to a list to scan several at once.

Prompts work because they take away the hardest choice – what to write about – and leave you with the fun part: deciding what happens.

How to use it

  1. Pick a genre. Tap a chip such as fantasy, mystery or journaling to see prompts of that kind.
  2. Press Next (or the Space bar) for a new prompt.
  3. Copy the prompt you like and paste it at the top of your page or document.
  4. Switch to list view to see a batch of prompts together and choose your favorite.

Ways to use creative writing prompts

A daily writing habit

Set a timer for ten minutes, press Next once and write whatever comes. Doing this every day builds the habit faster than waiting for inspiration.

Classroom and homeschool

The "for kids" genre keeps things age-friendly. Put one prompt on the board, give everyone fifteen minutes, then share a few stories out loud.

Beating writer's block

When your own project stalls, write something unrelated for a while. A fresh prompt in a different genre often shakes loose the idea you were stuck on.

Journaling

The journaling genre asks questions about your day, your memories and your plans. They're a gentle way to start writing when a blank page feels like too much.

Writing groups and challenges

Give everyone the same prompt and compare how differently each person takes it. It's one of the best ways to learn from other writers.

Poetry practice

Poetry prompts suggest an image, a mood or a form to try. Pair them with the rhyme generator when you want lines that rhyme.

Tips for getting more from a prompt

  • Don't wait for the perfect prompt. Take the first one that sparks anything at all and see where it goes.
  • Twist it. Change the point of view, move the story to a different time, or tell it from the villain's side.
  • Combine two prompts from different genres for something unexpected, like a funny mystery.
  • Add random words. Pull three words from the random word generator and make them all appear in your story.
  • Need a first sentence? The random sentence generator can hand you one.
  • Keep a list. Copy prompts you want to come back to into a notebook or document.
  • Finish badly. A messy draft you can fix beats a perfect story you never start. Editing comes later.

Questions

What is a writing prompt?

A writing prompt is a short idea, question or situation that gives you something to write about. It means you never have to face a blank page with nothing in mind.

Where do these story ideas come from?

We wrote every prompt ourselves for this site. None are copied from books or other websites.

Are there writing prompts for kids?

Yes. Choose the "for kids" genre for prompts written with younger writers in mind.

How scary are the spooky prompts?

They're mild: think creaky houses and strange noises rather than anything gory. They suit older kids and adults who like a gentle chill.

Can I use these creative writing prompts in my own stories?

Of course. A prompt is only a spark, and the story you write is your own.

How long should I write for?

There's no rule. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for a quick exercise, but if a prompt grabs you, keep going.

Can teachers use the writing prompts generator in class?

Yes. Pick the "for kids" or everyday life genre, show one prompt to the class, and give everyone the same amount of time to write.

Do you have prompts for poetry and journaling?

Yes. Poetry and journaling each have their own genre chip.
