What the jumbled word solver does

Jumbled word puzzles hand you a word with its letters out of order, and this tool puts them back. It checks your letters against our dictionary of about 171,000 English words and shows the full-length answers – the words that use every letter – at the top. Shorter words come next, in case the puzzle wants something smaller or you just want to explore.

The solver doesn't know which word a particular puzzle is after. It shows every real word your letters can make, so when there's more than one, the clue or the crossing letters help you choose.

How to unjumble letters

  1. Type the jumbled letters. Up to 15 letters, in the order the puzzle gives them or any other order – it makes no difference.
  2. Add a ? for any letter you can't make out. You can use up to three blanks. The letters they stand for are highlighted in the results.
  3. Search. Words that use all of your letters appear first. Below them are shorter words made from the same letters, longest first.
  4. Copy the answer. Tap a word to copy it, or open its three-dot menu to check the definition.

Ways to use it

Jumbled word puzzles in the newspaper

Newspaper puzzles often give you a few scrambled words to solve, then ask you to use some of their letters for a final answer. Solve each scrambled word here first, then type in the leftover letters to crack the last part.

Puzzle books and activity pages

Kids' activity books love scrambled words. When one has you stumped, type it in and check the answer – then try the next one on your own.

Classroom warm-ups

Write a scrambled word on the board as students come in. Whoever unjumbles it first gets to pick the next one. Use the solver to make sure each puzzle has only one answer.

Party games and quizzes

Running a quiz with a scrambled-word round? Check that every scramble really works, and that none of them has a second answer you didn't expect.

Letter games with friends

In any game where you rearrange letters, the full-length words at the top show you the biggest play your letters can make.

Tips

  • Try some examples. kopetc gives pocket, glarci gives garlic, and ylimfa gives family.
  • More than one answer? You'll see them all. tacre can be crate, trace, react, cater or caret – use the puzzle's clue or crossing letters to pick the right one.
  • Solving by hand first? Look for common endings such as -ing, -ed and -er, and letter pairs such as th, ch and sh. Set them aside and the rest often falls into place.
  • Check your letter count. If no full-length word appears, make sure you copied every letter, including double letters.
  • Final answer is a phrase? Bonus answers are often two or three words. Use the multi-word mode of the anagram solver.
  • Making your own puzzles? The word scramble generator creates printable jumbled word sheets with an answer key.
  • Want more filters? The word unscrambler adds length, starts with, ends with and contains.
