What makes a word a palindrome?
Write a word backwards. If you get the same word, it's a palindrome. The name comes from Greek words meaning "running back again".
Palindromes come in two shapes:
- Odd length, with a middle letter that mirrors nothing: level, radar, civic, kayak. Everything to the left of the middle is copied in reverse on the right.
- Even length, with no middle letter: noon, deed, redder, pullup. The word splits into two halves that mirror each other exactly.
Short palindromes are everywhere – mom, dad, wow, eye, pop – but they get rare quickly as words grow longer.
The longest palindrome words
In our list, the longest palindrome words have seven letters. They include deified, repaper, reviver and rotator. Each one hinges on its middle letter: deified is dei, then f, then ied – the first half turned around.
Longer palindromes do exist in bigger dictionaries and in other languages, and whole sentences can be palindromes too, as long as you ignore spaces and punctuation.
Palindrome phrases
Phrases can be palindromes if you read only the letters. A few short ones:
- Top spot
- Stack cats
- Race car
- Don't nod
- Pull up
Want to make your own? Start in the middle and build outward, adding the same letter to both ends each time. Short words like on, no, saw and was are useful, because they mirror each other.
Words that spell another word backwards
Some words aren't palindromes but turn into a different word when reversed. They're sometimes called semordnilaps – which is "palindromes" spelled backwards.
- stressed and desserts
- drawer and reward
- live and evil
- star and rats
- stop and pots
- gulp and plug
- spoons and snoops
These pairs make great puzzles and classroom challenges. For words that use the same letters in any order, try the anagram solver.
Ways to use palindromes
In the classroom
Palindromes are a gentle way into spelling patterns and symmetry. Ask students to find one in each length from three to seven letters.
In puzzles and quizzes
"Name a seven-letter palindrome" stumps most people. Keep this list handy to check answers.
In names
Plenty of names read the same both ways, like Anna, Otto, Hannah, Ava and Eve. They make fun character names for stories.
In writing
A palindrome phrase makes a memorable title or a hidden joke. Try writing one about your pet or your street.
Questions
What is the longest palindrome word?
In our list, the longest single words have seven letters, such as deified, repaper, reviver and rotator. Larger dictionaries include a few longer ones.
Is racecar a palindrome?
Yes – the letters read the same both ways. Many dictionaries spell it as two words (race car), and the word list we use doesn't include it as one word, so it isn't in the list above.
What is the difference between a palindrome and an anagram?
A palindrome reads the same backwards. An anagram is a new word made by rearranging all the letters of another word, like listen and silent. The anagram solver finds them for you.
Can a sentence be a palindrome?
Yes, if you ignore spaces, capital letters and punctuation. Short ones like top spot or stack cats are a good place to start.
Are there palindrome names?
Yes – Anna, Bob, Otto, Hannah, Ava and Eve all read the same in both directions.
